Ratchet Strap utility.

Updated: Feb 10, 2022

If you are the owner of a solid front axle truck, take note. You may someday be in a situation where your u-bolts or mounting studs fail. If you find yourself with this problem fear not. A ratchet strap can be your savior.

Simply wrap the strap around your axle tube and leaf spring, snug it and tighten. This will get you to where you need to be to make permanent repairs.

On a trip in the Oregon backcountry recently, I cracked the frame near the driver’s side front shock mount. We were 50 miles SE of John Day and needed to keep moving. The shock mount was unbolted and pivoted horizontally and a ratchet strap splinted the frame together. A second (beefy USGI) strap was run from the transmission crossmember to the frame aft of the steering box and it further sucked the truck back together. We drove extremely slow and took wide turns to John Day out of the wilderness. KEEP SOME RACHET STRAPS HANDY!

Temporary repair in the heart of nowhere. This fix got us 50 miles to permanent repairs…
